Russia may change fuel storage regulations for power plants

MOSCOW, Jun 22 (PRIME) -- The Energy Ministry and the Federal Service for Environmental, Technological, and Nuclear Oversight are studying regulations for fuel storages at power plants to change them to avoid soil and water contaminations, the ministry said in a statement on Monday.

“The Energy Ministry of Russia and the service have started analysis of demands that the regulatory acts have regarding the fuel storage conditions at power plants with the aim of developing and making changes necessary to prevent contamination of soil and water resources,” the statement read.

The ministry ordered the companies, whose reservoirs are similar to the diesel power plant in Yakutia’s village of Argakhtakh, to analyze the risks of oil product spills and to implement measures that reduce the risks.

On June 21, around 5 tonnes of diesel fuel leaked from a damaged fuel tank at the Argakhtakh diesel power plant, contaminating soil and leaking to the Alazeya River through the soil. On May 29, a fuel tank at Norilsk-Taimyr Energy Company, part of Norilsk Nickel group, got damaged due to a setting collapse and leaked out 21,000 tonnes of fuel.
